Harvest for Hope: A Guide to Mindful Eating. Jane Goodall. Time Warner Book Group. New York, NY. 2005.

Book review by Jane
This book is another excellent presentation of why we should eat local organic and free-range foods (as well as less meat) when we can. Many of the principles I have already learned from other books reviewed on this Web site, but Dr. Goodall is excellent at naming and explaining her sources very clearly. She dives right in, using the names of people involved. Take for instance the Percy Schmeiser case, which went to Canada's Supreme Court, where genetically modified food seed infected his farm and the corporation actually sued him. Just amazing.

Jane Goodall is not in favor of corporations taking over the world's food supply. She is in favor of some regulations geared to what can be called organic, however. Jane Goodall talks about the chemicals in our food supply, the treatment of farm animals by big corporations, and hazards to health because of the way the food supply is treated. With all the gloom and doom, and it is very, very bleak, comes a streak of hope from Jane Goodall, as she also talks specifics about what is being done and by whom to help fix the problem. Dr. Goodall confronts the global realities of food and water supply issues, and she is interested in the efforts of local farms and small business owners to improve the lives of local families. She also informs the reader of what can be done by each individual to help make a difference.

If you are looking for a resource about our food supplies and making decisions to eat healthy foods to improve the impact our eating has on the planet, this is a good book to get started. The reference pages brim over with further reading and Web sites. The book also has pictures, which if you read my reviews you know I appreciate from a good non-fiction selection. It is clear from the pictures that Jane Goodall still has a strong love for wild animals as well as the farm animals.
