The Eyre Affair: A Thursday Next Novel. Jasper Fforde. Penguin Highbridge (Aud); Abridged edition. 2002.

Book review by Jane
This novel is the first in what promises to be literally a literate series of Thursday Next stories. Thursday Next is not just some ordinary librarian heading to work every day; instead, she works hard to keep books safe from intrusions, as stories have lives of their own in her world and are worth saving. Literature is definitely something to protect, and Jane Eyre comes in danger. To top things off, just as the story of Jane Eyre is turning sour and the threat to her story life is eminent, Thursday Next’s love life takes tumultuous flips.

The story is hilarious and every character is charmed. There is no mixing of the good and the bad in the characters, and that is about the only thing that is predictable in the turns of this story. There are clever twists on classic stories cited that may not be clear if you haven’t read some of the classics, especially Jane Eyre (Penguin Classics), an English classic novel. You need to pay attention to some of the science fiction additions to this novel as well, including a time traveling father and cloned, extinct animals. You will never look at bookworms in quite the same way after this book.

By listening to the audio of this book, I may have missed some spellings, especially of names, that must have added to the story. But I thoroughly enjoyed having this story read to me.

Jasper Fforde has shown great imagination with Thursday Next and her high adventures. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series. The Eyre Affair: A Thursday Next Novel won the 2003 Alex Award.

Jane.
