The Disappearance Book review by Jane I found this book at the library discount sale and picked it up just in time to do jury duty. I've placed it down and read it in between library books until I finally finished it. I only have the library books for a short time, and getting back to this book was something I could do and not take a chance on turning my books in late. I don't usually pick books in this genre and prefer not to get too technical about blood and guts. This book, however, came along right before the forensics got so graphic and completely damning to the perpetrators. I kept wondering if there wasn't some DNA evidence back in those days, or at least blood types used, but none of that came up in the story. I was expecting too much, I guess. Times have already changed so much. These days on the daytime talk shows it's all about testing the DNA of a child's possible father. But that's neither here nor there. The book is about a maverick-type lawyer who comes back into practice to defend a man who it soon becomes clear is a total scumbag. He claimed he did not murder the victim, who was a 14-year-old girl. Of course, the story has many twists, turns, and finally ends. I wondered if this would be one of those books where Joel would say he knew what was going to happen and it did not surprise him much. I didn't find myself knowing what would happen. I did think the book was well-written; it was just not my usual cup of tea. I didn't like the way it ended and although it was somewhat of a surprise, I didn't buy into it like I think was intended. At any rate, it had to end someway similar to the way it turned out, because everything else was blocked from happening as the story went on. I guess that is how the genre works. But the courtroom excitement was alright. Jane. Visit Book Reader's Traverse Home Page for more selections.
