The Corrections: A Novel Book review by Joel I waited a while before reviewing this one. This book is about a dysfunctional family whose patriarch is fighting dementia, and slowly losing all touch with reality. The mother just wants everyone back for one last Christmas holiday, and she is not afraid to guilt everyone into it. The children consist of two brothers; one who is a slacker supreme, and one who feels responsible for everyone and everything; and one sister, who is a master chef but cannot control her personal life. This book is a comedy, and a serious look at dysfunction in the modern household. There are times in the book that I laughed aloud and thought the descriptions Franzen used were genius. It is a very good book. My only problem with this book is that I didn't like any of the characters. They were all unlikable and they didn't become likable through the ordeal of living in this book. I know it is probably just me but I couldn't relate on any level to these people, and I am from the Midwest. And from a weird family (my sisters fly kites made from llama wool and my mom used to yell at the television.) I would still recommend this book because it is well written. With the fleshed out, three-dimensional characters, and an interesting story, Franzen has a way of painting a picture with words that is refreshing and rare. Joel.
