Border Music . Robert James Waller. Grand Central Publishing. 1996.
Book review by Tracey
This novel is first and foremost about people. The characters are the
only real subject. Much like Mr. Waller’s book, The
Bridges of Madison County ,
this story explores each character’s personality in a detailed manner,
yet leaves the reader with many more questions than it answers. Texas
Jack Carmine is a Viet Nam veteran who has spent almost his entire adult
life wandering about the United States. He works here and there, but is
basically an anti-establishment kind of guy. He meets up with Linda Lobo,
a dancer in an adult club, by punching out a man who is being ungentlemanly
to the lady. They take off on their own adventure together. Just two people
searching for a little bit of happiness in their lives. What happens from
there is for people who read the book to know. These characters could
easily be someone or anyone you might know. I found myself wondering about
them, wanting more background than was given. Perhaps I wanted to pass
judgment. Perhaps I just have a hard time taking things at face value.
In any case, I found this book to be an interesting study in humanity.
The story did some wandering, so did the characters. Don’t we all?
