And
Where Were You, Dr. Spock? Book Review by Jane This story is about a little girl, Mary Margaret Ryan, who grew up in Louisville, Kentucky in the 1930’s. She was raised by her grandmother, who ran a boarding house. Mary Margaret had run-ins with nuns, boarders, locals, and relatives that were so comical a reader will laugh out loud. However, Mary Margaret had a few tragedies in her life; one being her separation from her parents, and another being what would today be considered abuse suffered at the hands of some of the nuns. Mary Margaret’s cuteness is not overshadowed by her spunk. She makes friends easily and pursues her dreams readily. The author has a similar background as Mary Margaret. This book was published after her retirement from the Courier-Journal newspaper in Louisville, Kentucky. It is a must for people who are interested in Louisville, but also contains great insights into a time that is considered to be more innocent than today, but in reality, condoned things that are no longer supposed to be accepted, such as harsh corporal punishment. At any rate, this book leaves the reader with the feeling that they are getting an honest look at what was going on in Mary Margaret’s life and her surroundings. To top it off, this book provides pure enjoyment. Tracey suggested this book.
