Becky Chapman's Biography
I enjoy creating art inspired by many and diverse sources: literature, poetry, songs, nature, travel and personal themes. Many of my images in this exhibit are pencil illustrations. Drawing has always been a natural way to express feelings or to create a certain mood. Even in my watercolor paintings, I will reach for pencil to create extra detail. Many of my drawings tell a story- from a song, literature or from private thoughts and reflections.
I also enjoy creating paintings of places we've visited. I've started the habit of carrying a sketchbook with me on travels that my husband and I may go on during the year. This enables me to create a very special and personal souvenir of our trip. Some of these sketches may later inspire a painting.
Nature inspires me - especially images of flowers and birds. The detail in both flower petals and feathers of a bird'€™s wing both inspire and challenge. I enjoy capturing the beauty of birds I remember from growing up on a farm, including the "red Winged Blackbird," the "Meadowlark," "The Junco," and "A Bluebird Family." Their diversity of color and behavior fascinates me.
I work as a graphic designer, so I am used to strict guidelines and deadlines. Drawing and painting offers a nice break that allows me to use my creativity in a free manner. The fine arts are my first love, though I enjoy creating a brochure or ad that communicates what a particular business or organization is about or what they offer. I sometimes can combine graphic design and fine arts into one project which is fun.
