The AKC Canine Good Citizen program was developed to recognize dogs who have good manners -- at home and in the public. The Canine Good Citizen Program begins the journey to other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

Testing involves:

Accepting a friendly stranger

Sitting politely for petting

Appearance and grooming

Walking on a loose lead
Walking through a crowd
Sit and down on command and stay
Coming when called
Reaction to another dog
Reaction to distraction
Supervised separation
