Entrance Tile

Unfortunately I don't have any before pictures to show as I forgot to take any. The tile that used to be there was strange and I'd never seen anything like it. It was different colored one inch squares, but the tiles were not grouted, they sat in little gray rubber boots. As I pulled them up, they came up in ten inch squares. The sub-floor was a double layer of 1/4" plywood of assorted sizes. Not the best sub-floor for laying new tile.

You can see the glass-block half-wall, that was at the entrance, laying on the floor. You can't imagine just how heavy this half-wall was. It was incredibly heavy and I had a hard time just laying it down, much less moving it. Fortunately it came apart in three sections, the half round front and the two side walls. I carefully broke the walls into smaller pieces by hammering the mortar lines and took them out to the garage.

You can see the hardwood oak floor that was under the block wall and old tile floor. It's to bad that the floor wasn't in good enough shape to just refinish the entire room. Someone had top-nailed the entire room with spiral nails. I had enough with the spiral nails in the hallway, but you can read about that in the floors section.

I put down 1/2" plywood for the base of this tile project and changed the dimensions of the entrance area just enough so I wouldn't have to make any tile cuts. It was somewhat of a suprise to find oak hardwood floors under the tile entrance and glass block wall. What were these people thinking? Note the nice green paint that used to be on the walls.

You can see in this picture how big the glass block wall was. It was just incredibly heavy and I shouldn't have tried to remove it by myself.

The tile went in without to much trouble and looks really good. I don't mind laying tile to much, but after the closet tile project and now this entrance tile project I am glad that I don't do tile for a living.
