NOTE: Many of the persons on this particular page are not my direct ancestors. These are the relatives of my grandfather Hickman's 2nd wife, who is the person that I knew as "Grandmother," since my biological grandmother died when my father was not quite 12-years of age.

Valentine and Mary (Spires) Hacker were the parents of Andrew Hacker.

This Andrew Hacker was born 15 December 1836.

Andrew and Sarah Ann (Gwaltney) Hacker were the parents of John Wesley (born about 1857), William Presley "Doc" Hacker (described below), Willis W. Hacker (twin of William Presley Hacker), Pamela Louisa (Hacker) Robinson, Mary Ann (Hacker) Anderson, and Sarah Jane (Hacker) Hendrickson.

Catherine Polley (shown in photograph above) married William Presley "Doc" Hacker on 06 July 1874 in Monroe County, Indiana.

William Presley "Doc" Hacker was a circuit doctor (physician) who travelled to treat people. He would spend the night in a home that was expecting an imminent birth. Sometimes he was paid for his services with a chicken or a dozen eggs. Catherine (Polley) Hacker utilized some home remedies to treat the family's ailments.

Catherine (Polley) Hacker had a nephew-in-law named, Arthur Brannam (who was married to Dora (Polley) Branam) who lived in Hindustan, Washington Township, Monroe County, Indiana. This Arthur Branam was chairman of the Monroe County (Indiana) Democratic Party and he ran the Monroe County License Bureau for some time. Arthur and Dora (Polley) Branam were the parents of Byron Branam, a Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana police officer. This Byron Branam was born 11 March 1903 and died 01 May 1993 in Monroe County, Indiana. Byron and Mary F. (Crider) Branam (born 25 June 1914), the daughter of John and Lottie (Krebs) Crider) were married on 21 May 1938 in Monroe County, Indiana. Catherine (Polley) Hacker eventually lived with her daughter, Mary Ellen "Mol" (Hacker) Rice Hickman (also shown in photograph above) and Mary's second husband, Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr.

She was the mother of my father's step-mother, but Dad loved her and still calls her "Grandma Hacker."

She became a grandmother to my father when Dad was only 12 years old.

Dad's paternal grandmother died when Dad was 5-years old.

Dad's maternal grandmother died before Dad was born.

Dad's own mother died when he was ll-years old.

So, "Grandma Hacker" was very special in Dad's life.

Four (4) Children of William Presley "Doc" Hacker and Catherine (Polley) Hacker were:


• Andrew "Andy" or "Pete" Hacker, who was born 08 April 1877. "Andy" married Ida Allen on 16 August 1941 in Monroe County, Indiana. This Ida Allen was born 12 April 1878 and was the daughter of T. Patterson Allen and S. (Hamm) Allen. Given their advanced age at the time of this marriage, there may have been former marriages for Andrew and Ida. For example, county records show that an Andrew Hacker married Sarah Elizabeth Boltinghouse.

• "Viney" (Elvina?) Hacker, who married Dan McCoy. Viney and Dan McCoy were the parents of Floyd McCoy (born 27 December 1907, married to Naomi Dobson, died in August 1959.) Dan and "Viney" (Hacker) McCoy had at least four children (Harrell, Josie, Lloyd and Floyd).
  
  
• Mary Ellen "Mol" (Hacker) Rice Hickman. Mary was born 13 June 1881. Her first marriage was to Ora R. Rice, a farmer in Greene County, Indiana. Ora Rice died when a mule kicked him in the head.
  
  Mary's second marriage was to Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr. on 14 November 1932 in Monroe County, Indiana. (This Charles Hickman was born 16 March 1877 in Orange County, Indiana. He was my grandfather.)
  
  No children were born in Mary's second marriage, but Mary had five children from her first marriage (John, Herbert, Jesse, Ada and Robert) and Charles had six children from his first marriage (Dana, Jesse, Roxey, Mable, Harold and Rhea Dawn).

Ora R. Rice, the first husband of Mary Ellen (Hacker) Rice Hickman, was born 19 March 1875.

He was the son of John Thomas Rice (born 08 December 1851) and Belaria Eldine Reeves (born 18 September 1852).

Ora R. Rice had at least two siblings, including William Austin Rice (born 13 April 1889) and Charles Rice.

Ora R. Rice died on 06 April 1927, at the age of 52-years, after being kicked in the head by a mule.

This left Mary Ellen (Hacker) Rice a widow with 5 children --- John (age 23), Herbert (age 20), Jesse (age 15), Ada (age 12), and Bob (age 10).

More than five years passed before Mary married her second husband, Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr., on 14 November 1932. Charlie Hickman first wife had passed away three months before his marriage to Mary Ellen (Hacker) Rice.

Ora R. Rice's great-grandfather was probably Benjamin Rice of Garnade County, Kentucky.

Inas V. Rice (born 06 November 1920) was a daughter of the brother of the first husband of Mary Ellen (Hacker) Rice Hickman, with Mary being the second of Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr.’s 3 wives.

Jesse (Lane) Fisher (born 08 September 1918 in Paoli, Orange County, IN) was a first cousin of Harold Ellsworth Hickman and Rhea Dawn (Hickman) Brinson.

Mary (Barnett) Lane was married to Charles Kenneth Lane, with Charles being a first cousin of Harold Ellsworth Hickman and Rhea Dawn (Hickman) Brinson.

Mary “Mol” Ellen (Hacker) Rice Hickman (born 13 June 1881) was first married to Ora R. Rice and the mother of Herbert, John, Jesse, Ada & Bob Rice. Mary’s second husband was Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr., who was first married to Mary Elizabeth (Fears) Hickman. Charlie and Mary (Fears) Hickman were the parents of Dana, Jesse, Roxey, Mable, Harold & Rhea Dawn Hickman. So, there were 11 children in the blended families of Charlie Hickman and Mary Ellen (Hacker) Rice Hickman. After Mary Ellen (Hacker) Rice Hickman died, Charlie had a third wife named Stella (Bennett) Easter Hickman, and Stella had 5 or 6 children of her own.

Ada Catherine (Rice) Wilson (born 1914 in Clear Creek, Monroe County, Indiana) was a step-sister of Harold Ellsworth Hickman & Rhea Dawn (Hickman) Brinson as well as of Dana, Jesse, Roxey & Mable. Ada’s brothers were Herbert, John, Jesse & Bobby.

Minnie Ellen (Hickman) Lane (born 22 September 1879 in Orange County, Indiana) was an aunt of Harold Ellsworth Hickman & Rhea Dawn (Hickman) Brinson, because Minnie was one of Charlie Hickman’s sisters. Minnie had 12 children. The first two, twin girls, died during early childhood.

Dana Frances (Hickman) Lee (born 15 December 1901 in Orange County, Indiana) was a sister of Harold Ellsworth Hickman & Rhea Dawn (Hickman) Brinson. She and William Franklin Lee were the parents of Charles William Lee and Robert Wesley Lee.

Robert Wesley Lee (born 1942 in Bedford, Lawrence County, IN) was a nephew of Harold Ellsworth Hickman & Rhea Dawn (Hickman) Brinson.

Mable Hacker was married to the brother of the first husband of the second wife of Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr.

Roxey Minnie (Hickman) Corbin (born 02 January 1907 in Orange County, IN) was a sister of Harold Ellsworth Hickman & Rhea Dawn (Hickman) Brinson.

Leslie Harold “Bucky” Corbin (born 20 February 1942 in Bloomington, Monroe County, IN) was a nephew of Harold Ellsworth Hickman & Rhea Dawn (Hickman) Brinson, and his middle name was given after his uncle, Harold Ellsworth Hickman. He was the youngest of Roxey’s three sons.

Mable Marie (Hickman) Reynolds (born 12 May 1909 in Orange County, IN)was a sister of Harold Ellsworth Hickman & Rhea Dawn (Hickman) Brinson.

Dorothy Jean (Jones) Cunningham (born 1926) was a daughter of Hazel M. (Lane) Jones, with Hazel being a first cousin of Harold Ellsworth Hickman & Rhea Dawn (Hickman) Brinson. Dorothy was a granddaughter of Minnie Ellen (Hickman) Lane & Bloomer Enoch Lane.

Ruth Anne Fisher was a daughter of Jesse (Lane) Fisher, with Jesse being a first cousin of Harold Ellsworth Hickman & Rhea Dawn (Hickman) Brinson.

Jesse Wilson was sister of the husband of Ada Catherine (Rice) Wilson, Ada being step-sister of Harold Ellsworth Hickman & Rhea Dawn (Hickman) Brinson.

Rhea Dawn (Brinson) Hickman was a sister of Dana Frances (Hickman) Lee, Jesse Charles Hickman, Roxey Minnie (Hickman) Corbin, Mable Marie (Hickman) Reynolds, and Harold Ellsworth Hickman. Rhea Dawn was the youngest child of Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth (Fears) Hickman.

Marjorie Elizabeth (Richardson) Rice (born 08 April 1919) was married to Robert “Bobby” Estelle Rice, with Bobby being a step-brother of Harold Ellsworth Hickman & Rhea Dawn (Hickman) Brinson. She was also a sister of Elmer Richardson who lived in Clear Creek, in southern Monroe County, Indiana.

Jackie Lee Rice was a son of Bobby & Marjorie (Richardson) Rice and a step-nephew of Harold Ellsworth Hickman & Rhea Dawn (Hickman) Brinson.

Clara (Isom) Rice was married to the brother of the first husband of Mary Ellen (Hacker) Rice Hickman, with Mary being the second of Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr.’s 3 wives.

Ellen Clara (Rice) Keller was a daughter of the brother of the first husband of Mary Ellen (Hacker) Rice Hickman, with Mary being the second of Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr.’s 3 wives.

The next boy, in white shirt, was James “Jim” Charles Corbin, oldest of three sons of Beatrice August “Pedro” Corbin & Roxey Minnie (Hickman) Corbin.

The older man sitting in the center of front row was Charles Rice, brother of Ora Rice. Ora Rice was the first husband of Mary Ellen (Hacker) Rice Hickman.

The little girl in Charles Rice’s lap was Clara Belle Keller, whose married name later was Clara Belle (Keller) Wyrick.

The older man in dark jacket seated next was Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr. (born 16 March 1877) son of Charles Ambrose Hickman Sr. & Roxey Emiline (Denton) Hickman.

The little boy in Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr.’s lap was Melville Edmund Rice, second son of Jesse Edmund Rice & Alverta (Taunton) Rice.

The man sitting on the right with hands on knees was Bloomer Enoch Lane (born about 1876), husband of Charles’ sister, Minnie Ellen (Hickman) Lane.

The next man was Merrill “Bud” Cunningham, husband of Dorothy Jean (Jones) Cunningham, a daughter of Minnie Ellen (Hickman) Lane.

The next man in white shirt and tie was Harold Ellsworth Hickman, son of Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr. & Mary Elizabeth (Fears) Hickman.

The next man, in a suit, was Beatrice August “Pedro” Corbin, husband of Roxey Minnie (Hickman) Corbin, daughter of Charles & Mary.

The baby Pedro was holding was Leslie Harold “Bucky” Corbin, son of Beatrice August “Pedro” & Roxey Minnie (Hickman) Corbin. (Bucky was born 20 February 1942.)

The next man, top of head showing over shoulder, was Harold R. Rice, a son of Charles Rice & Clara (Isom) Rice.

The next man, with vest and tie, was Robert “Bobby” Estelle Rice, son of Ora R. Rice & Mary Ellen (Hacker) Rice Hickman.

The next man, tall in suit, vest & tie, was William Raymond “Raymond” Rice, son of Charles Rice & Clara (Isom) Rice.

The next man, in light-colored clothes, was Jesse Edmund Rice, son of Ora R. Rice & Mary Ellen (Hacker) Rice Hickman.

Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr. and Minnie Ellen (Hickman) Lane were two of the children of Charles Ambrose Hickman, Sr. (born 06 August 1842 in Orange County, Indiana) and Roxey Emiline (Denton) Hickman (born 16 December 1848 in Crawford County, Indiana). Charles Sr. & Roxey had 11 children, including George Hickman (died in infancy), Issac “Ike” L. Hickman, Mary Ida (Hickman) Dunn Sweeny Newlin, John Wesley Hickman, Josiah A. Hickman, Charles Ambrose Hickman Jr., Minnie Ellen (Hickman) Lane, Rose E. (Hickman) Stewart, Norman Frank Hickman, Bill Hickman, & Elmer Ellsworth Hickman (named for his 7th cousin, Col. Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth, who was a close friend of President Abraham Lincoln and the first Union casualty in the U. S. Civil War).

Charles Ambrose Hickman and Minnie Ellen (Hickman) Lane were grandchildren of Isaac Hickman (born 1821 in Orange County, North Carolina) & Rebecca Collins (Henderson) Hickman (born 1822 in Kentucky), and of Allen Denton (born 16 July 1804 in Tennessee) & Clara “Clary” (Foster) Denton (born 1823).

Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth (Fears) Hickman had 6 surviving children, including: Dana Frances (Hickman) Lee, Jesse Charles Hickman, Roxey Minnie (Hickman) Corbin, Mable Marie (Hickman) Reynolds, Harold Ellsworth Hickman, and Rhea Dawn (Hickman) Brinson. The U. S. Census indicates another child between Mable & Harold, who must have died young.

Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth (Fears) Hickman had 16 grandchildren, including Charles William Lee, Robert Wesley Lee, Robert Eugene Hickman, Allen Jay Hickman, Carolyn Jay (Hickman) Witham Baxter, David J. Hickman, James Charles Corbin, John Walter Corbin, Leslie Harold “Bucky” Corbin, Wayne Reynolds, Donald Eugene Reynolds, Kenneth Austin Reynolds, Betty (Reynolds) Pittman, Mark Ellsworth Hickman, Susan Jean (Hickman) Sater, Cathy Jane Hickman & Maribeth Brinson.

Bloomer Enoch Lane (born about 1876 in Southeast Township, Orange County, Indiana) & Minnie Ellen (Hickman) Lane (born 22 September 1879 in Orange County, Indiana) had 12 children, including Ora or Orrie Lane & Lori or Lorie Lane (twin girls who died during early childhood), Hazel M. (Lane) Jones, Fern (Lane) Lane, William Glen Lane, Olive Faithe (Lane) Dailey Walls, Viola Mildred (Lane) Foster, Charles Kenneth Lane, Mary Lucille (Lane) Barnett, Jesse (Lane) Fisher, Ruth (Lane) Sturgeon Barrett, and Robert M. Lane (died in Europe where he was serving during World War II).

Mary Ellen (Hacker) Rice Hickman was a granddaughter of Andrew J. Hacker (born 15 December 1836) & Sarah Ann (Gwaltney) Hacker, and of Joseph L. Polley (born 23 February 1832 near Bloomington, in Monroe County, Indiana) & Margaret (Jackson) Polley (born about 1837 in Indiana).

Ora R. Rice (born 19 March 1875) and Mary Ellen (Hacker) Rice Hickman had 5 children including Herbert Rawleigh Rice, John William Rice, Jesse Edmund Rice, Ada Catherine (Rice) Wilson, and Robert Estelle Rice. They also had a child born between between John and Jesse, in 1906, who died in infancy.

Ora R. Rice and Mary Ellen (Hacker) Rice Hickman had at least 14 grandchildren, including Richard Lee Rice, Morris H. Rice, Betty Lou (Rice) Dinius, John William Rice Jr., Robert Elza Rice, William “Billy” Raymond Rice, Henry Roscoe Rice, Melville Edmund Rice, Mary Madonna (Rice) Newlin, Darlena Kay (Wilson) McGee Kinder Strahm, Melville Duane Wilson, Brenda Elaine (Wilson) Sparks Hancock, and Jackie Lee Rice.
