Floyd County,

Indiana

The beautiful wooded hills and river banks of the land that now comprises Floyd County, Indiana was home to a series of Native American cultures before Europeans arrived. The Miami, Shawnee, Wyandotte and Potawatomi were living here when the first French and English explorers first visited this region during the 18th century.

Located on the Ohio River on the southern border of Indiana, beautiful and historic Floyd County, Indiana comprises territory that was one of the first settlements by Europeans in the Indiana Territory. Floyd County was actually created out of part of Harrison County, so don't be fooled by those old records that first showed your ancestor in Harrison County, and then in Floyd County. Your ancestor may not have moved after all -- the county moved!

New Albany is the largest city, and county seat of Floyd County.

Located across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky, Floyd County offers a rich blend of rural beauty and big-city opportunities. See the Falls of the Ohio, the Devonian era fossil beds; spectacular views of the Ohio River and the skyline of Louisville; well-preserved victorian homes in the towns, and similarly kept 19th century farm homes in the countryside. Georgetown, where my Eddleman ancestors lived, has changed little in the past century.

Eat on a riverboat or ride a hot air balloon. Within New Albany, visit the Carnegie Center for Art and History, the Culberston Mansion, a vintage fire museum, or the Scribner House. In Jeffersonville check out the Howard Steamboat Museum. In nearby Clarksville you will find George Rogers Clark's homestead.
