The outboard aileron wing pivot block was made and fitted... This building step brings up the point that we should not make 24 identical ribs... Really it is 16-4-4... 4 ribs should have the vertical brace and associated gussets omitted where the aileron outboard hinge block is located and save a nasty carving step... 4 other ribs should have carved braces and gussets where the inboard wing attach hardware goes... Maybe some wood crafters will pick this change up and suggest a way to make and install into the rib jig these special braces and gussets... We want to fly this LEU serial #33 in April 2001... I was looking in the loft and found a roll of .8 mm wood that I didnt know I had and cant rember where it came from a dew drop from heven Ive got to look that loft over more carefully in the future I might buy something that I already have up there tomorrow I hope to get some of the leading edge wood glued on that will get the wing ready for varnish that is after the whole thing gets a good sanding thats all for this report leonard C.A.V.U. | 2001-01-17 | Glue & LEU #33 left wing aileron build out... | Subj: #9; Glue &LEU left wing aileron build out... Date:01/17/2001 3:57:40 PM Pacific Standard Time From:SKiblinger To:EaglersNests File: mvc01171.jpg (403558 bytes) DL Time (TCP/IP): < 1 minute

Dear Eaglers: Cold weather for Dulzura, CA has arrived... Last night we actually got down into the 20's for several hours producing the first black frost of the year... I have worked all week on tasks that don't require gluing and have a whole stack of ready to go pieces... Today the skies cleared and the shop south wall let the solar heat in so we glued... I have noted that the .08mm plywood we're using has one side that looks and feels like it has a sealer on it... Some sheets more so than others...I was concerned about the grip our T88 glue might have on that slick finish so I tested some joints... The results were grim! The parts separated at the glue line - you would not want to fly those glue joints... Glue joints on the fibrous side of the plywood were stronger than the tear out strength of the joined wood... I have always used the fibrous side and Stan did too on the rib gussets... I will probably work on the styrene foam plug for the gas tank today... I got to fire up my old hot wire tool for the foam cutting... I'm kind of looking forward to that cut on the foam block chord wise on the top using the 2nd and 3rd ribs as a hot wire guide... I've been fussing with blocking for the plug that makes the fuel travel to the rear corner of the tank in level flight and maintains a 1/4 inch clearance all around the tank... | 2001-01-18 | Engine building... | Dear Eaglers: I have been working on the "BrucesEngine" page of the web site for a more balanced personation of information regarding the 1/2 VW preparation... The head rework is the least documented and the most complex engine building task... I have posted a link to pictures made available by Danny Doolin - Thanks Danny! - that show the beginning of the head preparation sequence - the head cut... Searching the web for VW information suggests that the VW head offers the most likely target for more horsepower from the engine... The 3 angle valve grind and other flow enhancing cleanups are central to this improvement... There are multiple ways to put a second spark plug into the heads for dual ignition - a good old idea - but only the plug located between the push rod tubes has a serviceability track record... I contacted EAA chapter 292 about their 1/2 VW development and they reported problems with cracking on intakes of a bolt-on design - their web site shows a welded intake pipe - this may have been resolved and I will pursue more info on that... The 292 message is attached below: ubj: #9; Re: Betterhalf vw project... Date:09/10/2000 5:55:58 PM Pacific Daylight Time From:jouster@cyberis.net (John H Ousterhout) To:SKiblinger@cs.com Our half-VW is of our own design, but influenced by the Carr half-VW. It runs well on the stand but the vibration is cracking the intake mainfolds. Each carb is bolted to a stub mainfold that's bolted to the head. We'll probably go to a single carb. I expect more information when we start work on the engine again. Work on the Independence FLyer UL is slow because many of the project members have defected to build Nieuport 11's. regards - John - The 1/2 VW fuel consumption is reported ranging from 1 to 2.1 gallons an hour... It is also reported that the VW exhaust valve is the weakest part of the engine and some say it will fail every 200 hours in our application... Heat is the killer of exhaust valves and lean mixtures produce hot exhaust valves... Leonard reports the 2.1 gallon an hour figure and his jetting instructions for the Mikuni carbs is probably wise... We are thinking about the J3 Cub cylinder eye brow scoops as a model for flowing some more air in around the exhaust valve side of the head - we're at the sketches stage... Yes, I have Lenoard's motor plans, L.E. plans and the video-- mine didn't come with any numbers on it. Guess he is selling so may now, he's lost count! I will have more pictures to share in the near future. Unfortunately I can still take some more pictures of my head work! I.E. cutting flanges off the donor head, the tool it takes to get dual valve springs off a new head, fitting the flanges to new head and trimming for intake pipe. Etc. I have a tig welder, but I haven't decided if I want to weld mine myself. (extremely low time tig weldor) It was my idea, to try cutting the heads with the hack-saw, and come to find out you can be real accurate with it (you do have a lot of time to check it). I'm sure Leonard does some fine cutting with the hacker, but I believe he doesn't go in for a lot of fooling around when he goes to make little heads out of big ones. I think he uses a band saw for that. So I can't say how he deals with the push-rod tube hole. I know I didn't want to cut it, then have to be welding on it, then machining on it-- hoping it would seal. I have not welded mine yet, so mine may warp, and I end up doing it all anyway. Hope not. I had a near engine loss with my 150/180hp.... Smoke filled the cabin and I knew I had an oil leak. I managed to get back to LNN(Lost Nation Airport)... When I landed I pulled the cowling and found the pushrod tube to cylindar no. 2 had been pushed to the side.Hence the oil leak......I removed the rocker cover and the pushrod tube along with rod and found the rod to be bent, but more than that I could see pieces of metal next to the pushrod tube in the lifter casing..... When I removed the pushrod I could see that the casing around the lifter (tappit)had separated about 1/2" back from the tube seat.... Now that means, after talking to a couple of a&'s that the engine must be removed and the case split so the tappit and lifter can be replaced...I hope the exhaust valve is ok and no other problems exhist.....Now if the weather cooperates I will need to pull the engine.......I'm not sure yet if I will do the work with an A& or send it out.. I' ll try to work on the eagle in between but I will need time....See you later.... Ron |

| 2001-01-22 | (no subject) | Leonard: Sounds like your really on a roll!... I have the same left right challenge with the wing building... I'm sure all of you have seen my right and left root bracing in the right wing main spar by now... As you suggest Leonard, the right wing hanging across from the building table gets looked at a lot as I assemble the left wing... On the spars too I suggest putting them root to root as they would be in the plane... I've been making steady progress with the left wing and you can see where I'm at on the side bar of the WingsHow2?'s page... I'll put the last cross bracing on the aileron pocket and start closing the leading edge of wing and aileron tomorrow... I've just brushed on the varnish so far inside the leading edges but wonder if you spray the outside of your wings????? - I keep changing my mind - thinking about my days at GM Fisher body and the paint vat we used to run the whole body thru for the undercoat - probably put 50 pounds on those Chevy's right there... Man you'll be busy all the time with Young Eagles rides in the DEU!... Your productivity is amazing!!! | 2001-01-25 | Blauvelt/Kiblinger/Levin Ser#33 milestones... | Dear Eaglers: Actually 2 milestones have been reached this week on our project... I finally decided on a foam backed sanding pad with 220 wet or dry grit and applied it to the right wing on a cold non gluing day... I'm tall and I just left the wing hanging from the rafters as seen on our web site... The stand up work station was a right idea as there was no back ache at the end of the session... It took a while for me to develop a process which I won't go into here but the result was everything got sanded... The job took 4 hours of steady sanding and I took the razor edge off 2 pads... The wing feels m u c h smoother and I'm sure Leonard is right about the wood peach fuzz causing more varnish to be used... I had really dreaded the sanding and the cold day combined with good results was rewarding... Oh one more thing, I didn't get even one small splinter and attribute that to the 1/2 inch thick foam sanding pad!... The foam let's you get into all those corners and angles too and if you ambidextrous like me you can run 2 pads pretty slick on ribs... The other milestone is we're closing the leading edge box on both left aileron and wing which ofcourse is the end of wing building!... There is a lot of work in one of these wing halfs but the second one does go faster with all the little pieces already made and a clear sense of what is next...I'm 2 steps behind on the web site How2 page and think there are roughly 8 more pictures to go... The pictures have been taken when a glue drying period is required which also includes the varnish drying on inside of the boxes... Leonard registers the box skins with a cut off nail, marks the glue line on the skin and then takes the skin to a bench for the varnish... He glues the skin on in one session after the varnish dries... We glue the skin on the bottom of the spar, tape the glue lines, varnish and then close the box (3) days, Leonard does it 2 days - that's how Leonard gets productivity and economy!... Leonard also keeps his .08mm plywood in a roll with the gluing side in - the roll is stove pipe size (8-10 inches) and man does that make a good work ability difference - why didn't I think of that ;-)... Builder Slave, Steve |

| 2001-02-03 | Will Call pickups at Aircraft Spruce... | Eagler's: Most of your are not in California so I thought it might be of interest to describe a Will Call venture... Aircraft Spruce started out in an old orange packing warehouse along the railroad tracks in Fullerton... The Will Call dept. in those days (1978) was a one man operation and took hours but you got the right stuff on the day you wanted it... Slow and inaccurate shipping in those days made a market for Wicks... Today ACS is near the railroad tracks in Corona very near the Corona airport... ACS will pick you up at the airport and I've seen flyers using that service during my ACS visits... Thursday there were 6 people behind the Will Call counter and probably a dozen people in the display area being served thru browsing or getting material... I had shown my salesperson a 4 page order the week before and he said if I would wait an hour he would fill it completely and there was tube cutting involved - wood orders (like for our wings) take one to four weeks, however... The warehouse itself is huge and there are lots of people working an automated inventory picking and management system - the online inventory quantities always seem to be accurate and they check before you drive - it's 91 miles each way for me... The display area is probably 1500 sq. feet and stuffed with all the things you know and desire from how-to video's to two completed projects hanging from the ceiling with one side showing the understructure - a KR2 and an Avid Flyer... The final thing is that you can made a material change if you have erred... I switched my Lexan wind screen to Leonard's called for .80 material instead of the lighter .60 that I thought would be serviceable - too flimsy... I also was picking up the covering materials and the 1.7oz Stits x 23 lineal yards comes wrapped like Christmas paper on a core as do the tapes and weigh nothing yet the primer/varnish/glue/filler and silver coatings with catalyst's and thinner weigh a ton... I asked for a cart to haul it out... Normally you carry your stuff one handed and leave with an empty wallet... Today I varnished the inside of the leading edge aileron closure and put material away... It has been good building weather... My solar heating had the shop at 85 today and I cooled with open doors - good on the fumes too - that MEK is a tear jerker... Roman will come out tomorrow to lend 2 more hands for the aileron spar box closure... I will start locating the rib clamping blocks on the left wing leading edge... Stan and I are working on a date to prime the metal on the empennage and varnish the right wing using Stan's commercial HVLP paint system... Then all this reading of the Stits covering manual will have to be replaced by action... Date:02/07/2001 6:20:35 AM Pacific Standard Time From:SKiblinger To:EaglersNests Lanny: The seat back bend went difficult for me too... I thought about it as I approached that part of the fuselage and made the first one out of .035 wall - it was pretty and too weak... I jury rigged a curve block on the table and the second one came out of .049 wall and looked ugly with an irregular arc... Then I read the plans and put a soft wood 2x4 with different sized holes in my vice and bent it like Leonard sez... It does have some tiny dents that disappear under the strapping where the corner of the 2x hole hits the material - they are of no consequence - try it... Look at the attached picture re: attachments - use your die grinder to size attachment tube hole to angular irregularities... I am currently working on mine (serial 64F) and was wondering if you had any sage advise on how to get a clean roll in the seat back tubing. My conduit bender don't get it. Also, the cabin side tubing comes up at an angle both forward and aft. How do you get the gear and wing attach fittings to fit right (straight up and down) or do they ??? Do you have any close up pictures of this area. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. I have been using the hole in the board for a long time and if you are very careful you can avoid the little kinks I also use a livel on the tube while bending to avoid a rolling bend.
