  The Parable of the Prodigal Son is thought to have referred to areas around the Sea of Galilee. The father's estate was in Jesus' Evangelical Triangle: the orange area northwest of the Sea of Galilee. The "distant country" was the green area of Gaulanitis -- a Gentile area nearby geographically, but far removed in culture. Only in a Gentile area would farmers be raising pigs.
