  Jesus' Perean Ministry occurrs in the orange area, east of the Dead Sea in this map. Note the fortress of Machaerus along the Dead Sea where John the Baptist was murdered.

Jesus talks about "salt losing its saltiness" (Lk 14:34). He may be referring to impure salt gathered from Salt Chimneys like these beside the Dead Sea. (Left: View showing height of chimney. Although the inpurities removed from this salt is mineral-rich, it can't be used as fertilizer (Lk 14:35) . . . it's only use is as gravel on a pathway (Mt 5:13).
