“My servant('s) . . . appearance was disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness. . . . He was despised and rejected by men. . . . He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows. . . . He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. . . . He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. . . . It was the LORD’s will to . . . cause him to suffer; . . . the LORD makes his life a guilt offering. . . . He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.” (Isa 52:13-14; 53:3, 5, 7,10, 12)

Jesus was flogged and crucified. Above is an artist's sketch of flogging (left) and crucifixion (center), based on archaeological information. Right: recently discovered heel bone of crucified man, with a nail driven through it.

Church of the Holy Sepulcher was built over the traditional location of Jesus' crucifixion and burial in Jerusalem. Left: church as it stands today. Right: rock quarry beneath Church of the Holy Sepulcher, illustrating that the church is probably the authentic location of Jesus' crucifixion.

Left: chapel in Church of the Holy Sepulcher where (traditionally) Jesus was crucified. Note Rock of Calvary beneath glass in bottom of picture. Center: entrance to Jesus' traditional tomb in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Right: traditional site where Jesus' body was laid.
