Kokyu Nage

Reference: Arm Down

These examples are done using Tsuki as the attack but most attacks work the same way.

Example 1, Tsuki Kokyu Nage Irimi.

Movie of Tsuki Kokyu Nage Irimi.

Fig. 1 Start Fig. 2 Kuta Punch Fig. 3 2nd Strike Fig. 4 2nd Irimi Step

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start position with Uke and Nage spaced such that their extended lead arms do not quite touch.
  2. In Fig. 2 Nage's rear foot has stepped forward for the 1st Irimi step and Nage has delivered a Kuta Punch to Uke's throat or face.
  3. Fig. 3 shows the second punch to Uke's face. Nage's right arm has taken Uke's right arm down and between Uke and Nage as is normal in Arm Down Irimi. This arm movement breaks Uke's balance and traps Uke's lead foot making it difficult for Uke to kick Nage as Nage takes the 2nd Irimi step. It also makes a counter throw to Kokyu Nage that is normally quite easy very difficult.
  4. Fig. 4 shows the end of the 2nd Irimi Step. Notice that this is a normal Irimi Step except that it is behind Uke rather than in front. Nage's left leg brushes Uke's legs from the back rather than from the front. Nage steps in deeply and drops very low. This can seriously injure Uke's back so rather than holding Uke's right arm securely keeping Uke close as Nage would do to add insult to injury, in practice it is important to push Uke away so that Uke is not seriously injured.

5. Fig. 5 shows Uke down after Nage does the Tornado Twist. Notice that Nage is very low. This enables driving Uke down with tremendous power if needed.

Example 2, Tsuki Kokyu Nage Tenkan.

Movie of Tsuki Kokyu Nage Tenkan.

Fig. 6 Start Fig. 7 Kuta Punch Fig. 8 Take Grip Fig. 9 2nd Tenkan Step

  1. Fig. 6 shows the start position with Uke and Nage spaced such that their extended lead arms do not quite touch.
  2. In Fig. 7 Nage's lead foot has slid forward for the 1st tenkan step and Nage has delivered a Kuta Punch to Uke's throat or face.
  3. Fig. 8 shows that Nage has taken a normal Arm Down Irimi grip.
  4. In Fig. 9 Nage has taken the 2nd Tenkan Step and is continuing the Tornado Twist as normal in an Arm Down Tenkan.

5. Fig. 10 shows the point where Uke comes around the corner. At this point Nage is reversing and striking Uke's face with Nage's upper arm like an elbow strike. If Nage waits Uke will fall to the ground as in a normal Arm Down. Nage is in a deep squat and in practice Nage pushes Uke back so Uke does not fall on Nage's knee.
6. Fig. 11 shows the finish with Uke down.
