Kaiten Nage
Example 1: Kaiten Nage Principle
This exercise is presented to demonstrate the principle of Kaiten Nage and it also applies to Sankyo Tenkan. It is sometimes taught as a potential attack where Uke and Nage are walking towards each other and Nage just does this exercise.

Fig. 5 Half Way |
- Fig. 1 shows Nage's hand position at the beginning of the exercise. For this exercise Nage starts palm up with the hand in the finish position.
- Fig. 2 shows Nage's body position at the beginning of the exercise.
- In Fig. 3 Nage's right foot has stepped in beside Uke's right foot and Nage's right arm has reached behind Uke's head and caught Uke's neck. As Nage moves in Uke's right arm moves with Nage.
- Fig. 4 shows the end of the 2nd step. Nage's left foot has stepped behind Uke's left foot like the 1st Back Off Balance Step. Nage is connected to Uke so that Uke moves with Nage. Nage's Tornado Twist is screwing Uke into the ground.
- In Fig. 5 Nage is continuing with the 2nd Back Off Balance Step and Uke is half way down. If Nage does not squat down this is where Uke stops going down and Nage projects Uke away.

Fig. 6 shows the finish. Nage has finished the 2nd Back Off Balance Step and squatted down. By squatting down Nage has driven Uke into the mat rather than throw Uke away risking a counter throw and making weapon taking impractical. |

- In Fig. 9 Nage has swept Uke's arm down between Uke and Nage as usual for the Arm Down and taken the Arm Down grip. Nage is in the 2nd Irimi Step.
- Fig. 10 shows the end of the 2nd Irimi Step. Nage is squatted down and Nage's right arm is sweeping down with Uke's left arm.

Fig. 13 Hand Detail |
- In Fig. 11 Uke has fallen because of Nage's deep squat and the arm sweep down. Nage continues sweeping Uke's arm back as Nage's left leg which was back steps forward as in Ikkyo Irimi. As the arm sweeps back Uke's hand rolls over to change grips as shown in Fig. 13. Normally Nage would strike Uke's face at this point but because Uke has fallen Uke's head is usually too far away.
- Fig. 12 shows Nage applying a shoulder lock to Uke's arm. Nage's right hand is palm up with Nage's thumb on top at Uke's wrist.
- In Fig. 13 shows the transition hand position as Nage changes from the standard Arm Down grip to the grip in Fig. 12.
