Example 1, Front Leg Entry

Movie of Front Leg Entry.

Fig. 1 Start Fig. 2 Knee Pop Fig. 3 1st Irimi Step

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start position. Uke and Nage are spaced so that their extended arms and hands will not quite touch.
  2. Fig. 2 shows Nage in the Knee Pop. Nage's lead (left) leg collapses causing Nage to fall into Uke. This movement is facilitated by Uke's lead (left) hand scooping up for an uppercut type strike. This movement starts as soon as Uke starts to close on Nage.
  3. Fig. 3 shows Nage at the end of the 1st step forward. Nage's lead (left) hand is striking the back of Uke's head. Nage's back hand (right) is coming up to Nage's chest as is typical of Kuta Punches. This positions the back hand to protect Nage's upper body, rapidly deliver a 2nd punch, or participate in an Off Balance move.

    Fig. 4 2nd Strike Fig. 5 2nd Irimi Step Fig. 6 Finish

  4. Fig. 4 shows the 2nd strike. Initially Nage's hips were rotating clockwise getting Nage off of the line of attack. At this point Nage's hip rotation has reversed to initiate a second step and Nage's right hand is delivering a 2nd strike to Uke's face.
  5. Fig. 5 shows Nage's back (right) foot stepping forward between Nage's left foot and Uke. Nage's lead (left) hand has grabbed Uke's right arm so that Nage is throwing Uke with Tenchi Nage.
  6. Fig. 6 shows the finish with Nage squatting and driving Uke's head into the mat if necessary. In class we usually support Uke's head to prevent injury.

Example 2, Rear Leg Entry

Movie of Rear Leg Entry.

Fig. 7 Start Fig. 8 Knee Pop Fig. 9 1st Entry Step

  1. Fig. 7 shows the start position. Uke and Nage are normally spaced so that their extended arms and hands will not quite touch. The attack is when Uke moves within this range.
  2. Fig. 8 shows Nage in the Knee Pop. Nage's lead leg collapses causing Nage to fall into Uke. Nage's front foot does not step. Nage steps with the back foot. The strike with Nage's lead (left) hand is just striking Uke's face. In this picture Nage struck just in front of Uke and then extended through Uke's head.
  3. In Fig 9 Nage's rear (right) hand is striking the back of Uke's head. A strong hip twist is essential to get Nage off the line of attack.

Fig. 10 Tornado Twist Fig. 11 2nd Step Fig. 12 Squat

  4. Fig. 10 shows Nage's Tornado Twist as Nage's movement continues.
  5. Fig. 11 shows the end of the 2nd step with Uke falling.
  6. Fig. 12 shows the finish with Nage taking Uke to the mat.
