Shomen Uchi
Straight Strike to Head

Shomen Uchi Shiho Nage

Reference: Shiho Nage

Example 1, Shomen Uchi Shiho Nage Irimi.

Movie of Shomen Uchi Shiho Nage Irimi.

Fig. 1 Start of Irimi Fig. 2 1st Step Fig. 3 Strike Neck

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start of the Shiho Nage Irimi.
  2. Fig. 2 shows the end of Nage's 1st step. Uke's striking hand is between Nage and Uke making completing the Kuta strike dangerous. For this reason Nage meets Uke's arm with Nage's hands in an X block position. There is no block. Nage's back arm should be on top. Nage's lead elbow is moving towards Uke's face.
  3. Fig. 3 shows Nage's forearm striking Uke's neck. It is best not to use the tip of the elbow. Many martial arts use the tip of the elbow but Kuta teaches that there is too much danger of breaking the elbow. It is safer to use the forearm near the elbow.
  4. It is important to step to the side of Uke and not be directly in front. Uke's back arm should strike up as the lead arm comes down so timing is critical. Nage's elbow must strike Uke at about the time Uke's hand would have struck Nage. If Nage's elbow strike is late Uke's 2nd strike will land about 1/10 second after the 1st strike.

  5. Nage now steps in deeper. It is essential for Nage to be moving when going under Uke's arm. Fig. 4 shows the end of the 1st Irimi step when Nage's head is going under Uke's arm.
  6. Fig. 5 shows the end of the 2nd Irimi step. Nage's head has gone under Uke's arm. From here Nage can continue the Tornado Twist and finish the Shiho Nage Irimi or Nage can shift to another throw.

Example 2, Shomen Uchi Shiho Nage Tenkan

Movie of Shomen Uchi Shiho Nage Tenkan.

Fig. 5 Start Fig. 6 Strike Fig. 7 Hide

  1. Fig. 5 shows the start of the Shomen Uchi Tenkan.
  2. Fig. 6 shows Uke striking and Nage's lead arm meeting the strike to lead it down.
  3. Fig. 7 shows Nage hiding behind Uke's arm. As Uke's striking arm comes down Uke's other hand is going to strike Nage. It is essential that Nage get out of the way as Uke's striking hand starts coming down.

Fig. 8 1st Tenkan Step Fig. 9 2nd Tenkan Step

  4. Fig. 8 shows the end of the 1st Tenkan step. Nage's head is butting Uke in the ribs as it goes under Uke's striking arm. The head butt does not really hurt Uke but it does disturb Uke's balance and it gets Nage into the proper position for the throw.
  5. Fig. 9 shows the end of the 2nd Tenkan step. Nage's head has gone under Uke's striking arm and Nage is well into the Shiho Nage Tenkan. Nage now twist to wrap Uke around Nage completing the Shiho Nage Tenkan or Nage can change to another throw.
