Nikkyo

Example 1, Nikkyo Irimi

Movie of Nikkyo Irimi.

This is Shomen Uchi Nikkyo. It is being shown from the beginning to show how the Nikkyo grip is taken from the strike.

Fig. 1 Start Fig. 2 1st Irimi Step Fig. 3 2nd Irimi Step Fig. 4 Flatten Uke

  1. Fig. 1 shows the dynamic start. Nage and Uke are spaced so that their hands will not quite reach.
  2. In Fig. 2 Nage has taken the 1st Irimi Step while coming in for the Kuta Entry Strike. The striking arms intersect because both partners are protecting their faces. Nage's right arm is sweeping Uke's arm to Nage's right and Nage's left hand has contacted Uke's upper arm in standard Ikkyo fashion. The left hand on the elbow prevents Nage catching an elbow in the face.
  3. Fig. 3 shows the end of the 2nd Irimi Step. Nage's left hand has slid down to grasp Uke's wrist with a Nikkyo grip. Nage's left forearm is still protecting Nage's face from Uke's elbow.
  4. In Fig. 4 Nage has finished the Tornado Twist and stepped forward to flatten Uke just like Ikkyo.

Fig.5 Change Right Grip Fig. 6 Change Left Grip Fig. 7 Detail Of Grip

  5. In Fig. 5 Nage's right hand has changed to the Nikkyo grip on Uke's hand.
  6. Fig. 6 shows Nage squatted holding Uke with a Nikkyo grip. Nage's left hand has shifted to Uke's upper arm. Nage can now kneel as in Ikkyo for a formal pin or use a different pin to tie or hold Uke.
  7. Fig. 7 shows the detail of the Nikkyo grip.

8. Fig. 8 is in a position Nage would not really have but it shows the position of Nage's thumb pressing on Uke's meridian point LI 4. This is unpleasant for Uke. Some arts use points LI 2 and LI 3 on the 1st knuckle of Uke's hand but in Aikido this is considered dangerous because Uke might get a thumb screw on Nage.

Example 2, Nikkyo Tenkan

Movie of Nikkyo Tenkan

Fig. 9 End of Ikkyo Fig. 10 Left Hand to Wrist Fig. 11 Right Hand Nikkyo Grip

  1. Fig. 9 shows the point in the Ikkyo Tenkan where Nage starts shifting to Nikkyo. The 2nd step of the Ikkyo Tenkan has happened and Nage is in the Tornado Twist.
  2. Fig. 10 shows Nage continuing the Tornado Twist an Nage's hand that was above Uke's elbow has moved to Uke's wrist.
  3. Fig. 11 shows Nage's hand that was at Uke's wrist in the Ikkyo after it has shifted to the Nikkyo grip. Normally Uke tries to turn in and strike Nage at this point. The Nikkyo prevents Nage's turn in.

Fig. 12 Bring to Shoulder Fig. 13 Break Uke Down Fig. 14 1st Knee Down

  4. In Fig. 12 Nage has put the back of Uke's hand in the indentation formed by Nage's shoulder so that the connection between Nage's body and Uke's body is stronger.
  5. Fig. 13 shows Uke on the floor after Nage applies the Nikkyo. Nage is beginning to shift into the formal pin.
  6. In Fig. 14, Nage's knee by Uke's head has just touched the floor. Nage's arms are in the position of the formal pin.

    Fig. 15 2nd Knee Down

  7. Fig. 15 shows Nage's second knee on the floor by Uke's ribs. Nage's body is twisting Uke's arm so that Uke's hand is moving towards Uke's left shoulder and Uke's elbow is moving towards Uke's hips. Nage is pressing down on the arm so that both Uke's shoulders and Uke's hips are pinned down.

Example 3, Nikkyo Koshi Nage.

Movie of Nikkyo Koshi Nage.

Fig. 16 1st Koshi Step Fig. 17 2nd Koshi Step Fig. 18 Squat And Twist Fig. 19 Uke Down

  1. Fig. 16 shows the start after Nage has taken the 1st Koshi Step. Nage's right hand has a Nikkyo grip on Uke's right hand and Nage has raised Uke's elbow like a Sankyo Up. Uke has grabbed Nage's belt to make the fall easier. If Nage takes it slow and easy this is not necessary.
  2. In Fig. 17 Nage has taken the 2nd Koshi Step. Nage's hip has moved under Uke to a standard Koshi Nage position.
  3. Fig. 18 shows Uke falling. Nage's hips are squatting an twisting bringing Uke over the hip and down. Nage supports Uke so that Uke can turn over and fall on Uke's back rather than coming down on Uke's head.
  4. Fig. 19 shows Uke on the mat. From here Nage can turn Uke over and pin Uke.

Example 4, Nikkyo Koshi Nage #2.

Movie of Yankyo Koshi Nage #2.

Fig. 20 1st Koshi Step Fig. 21 2nd Koshi Step Fig. 22 Squat Fig. 23 Finish

  1. Fig. 20 shows the Arm Up position at the end of the 1st Koshi Step. Nage has just stepped in front of Uke. It is important to be moving Uke with Nage so that Uke is already losing balance.
  2. In Fig 21 Nage's right foot has stepped between Uke and Nage's left leg for the 2nd Koshi step. Nage's right foot steps out well in front of Uke for this style Koshi Nage. This is not completely obvious because Nage has led Uke forward forcing Uke's right foot to step forward so that Uke can roll.
  3. Fig. 22 shows Nage squatting very much as we normally squat. This forces Uke down and over Nage's hip. Nage is levering Uke's elbow to the mat forcing Uke's head toward the mat. It is critical for Uke's safety for Nage to release Uke's arm in time for Uke to roll.
  4. Fig. 23 shows Uke completing the roll toward the camera.
