Morote Tori
Two Hands Hold One Wrist

Morote Tori Ikkyo

Reference: Morote Tori

Morote Tori is the same as Katate Tori. The technique is done the same way with two hands holding one hand as it is with one hand holding one. It can be done on either arm.

Example 1, Morote Tori Static Ikkyo Irimi Back Arm.

Movie of Morote Tori Static Ikkyo Irimi back arm.

Fig. 1 Start Fig. 2 Kuta Punch Fig. 3 Catch Elbow

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start position with both of Uke's hands holding Nage's right wrist. This would be the same with just Uke's right hand holding Nage's right wrist. This is shown with static attack.
  2. Fig. 2 shows Nage coming in with a Kuta punch. This would normally be done with the lead hand but in this case the lead hand is held. Nage's right elbow is dropping down to bring Nage's right hand up on the outside of Uke's right wrist. This lifts Uke's right elbow. Uke is not likely to resist this because Nage's right elbow can parry the punch coming at Uke's face. Nage is also turning Uke's body to Nage's right.
  3. Fig. 3 shows the continuation of the motion in Fig. 2. As the elbow comes up Nage's left hand catches the elbow and Nage's right hand is coming above Uke's right arm for the Ikkyo.

Fig. 4 1st Irimi Step Fig. 5 2nd Irimi Step

  4. Fig. 4 shows the end of the 1st Irimi step. Nage is entering and wrapping Uke around Nage rather than pushing Uke away. This turns Uke away from Nage making Nage safer.
  5. Fig. 5 shows the end of the 2nd Irimi step. Nage can continue the Tornado Twist and finish the Ikkyo or shift to another technique.

Example 2, Morote Tori Static Ikkyo Tenkan Back Arm.

Movie of Morote Tori Static Ikkyo Tenkan back arm.

Fig. 6 Start Fig. 7 Kuta Punch Fig. 8 1st Step Fig. 9 2nd Step

  1. Fig. 6 shows the start with both of Uke's hands holding Nage's left forearm. Uke's left hand alone could have grabbed Nage's left forearm. It will not matter whether or not Uke holds on because Nage will control Uke's left arm.
  2. In Fig. 7 Nage's right hand is starting the Kuta punch. Nage's left elbow is dropping down rotating Uke's left arm so that the elbow goes up. Uke will not resist because Uke will want to use the elbow to parry the Kuta punch.
  3. Fig. 8 shows the end of the 1st Tenkan step. Nage's right hand is controlling Uke's left elbow. This prevents Nage from catching the elbow in the face and it is part of Ikkyo.
  4. In Fig. 9 Nage has continued the Tornado Twist to the end of the 2nd Tenkan step. From Here Nage will continue the Tornado Twist and finish Ikkyo Tenkan or change to another technique.

Example 3, Morote Tori Dynamic Ikkyo Irimi.

Movie of Morote Tori Dynamic Ikkyo Irimi.

Fig. 10 Start Fig. 11 Strike Fig. 12 Move Forward Fig. 13 Step Around

  1. Fig. 10 shows the start of the dynamic Ikkyo Irimi.
  2. Fig. 11 shows Uke striking and Nage attacking into the preparation.
  3. In Fig. 12 Uke steps in for the throw and sweeps Nage's hand down for the Morote Tori grip. Nage moves forward with Uke's extension so that Nage's balance is not lost.
  4. In Fig. 13 Nage continues coming around Uke being sure to push Uke forward rather than letting Uke extend Nage's arm. This is gentle.

Fig. 14 Ikkyo Hands Fig. 15 Tornado Twist Fig. 16 Enter

  5. Fig. 14 shows Nage taking the Ikkyo arm position. Nage's right hand comes up on the outside of Uke's right wrist causing the elbow to turn up. At the same time Nage's left hand strikes at Uke's head. This encourages Uke's arm to raise to parry the punch. Together it is easy to get Uke's elbow up.
  6. In Fig. 15 Nage steps in and continues the circular movement for the Tornado Twist.
  7. Fig. 16 shows the end of the Irimi step in. This footwork is not quite the same as the static footwork because of the dynamic motion.

Example 4, Morote Tori Dynamic Ikkyo Tenkan.

Movie of Morote Tori Dynamic Ikkyo Tenkan.

Fig. 17 Start Fig. 18 Strike Fig. 19 Move Forward Fig. 20 Step Around

  1. Fig. 17 shows the start of the Dynamic Ikkyo Tenkan.
  2. Fig. 18 shows Uke striking and Nage attacking into the attack.
  3. In Fig. 19 Uke steps in and sweeps Nage's hand down into the Morote Tori grip. Nage moves forward with the attack so that Nage's balance is not lost.
  4. Fig. 20 shows Nage stepping around Uke so that Nage can maintain extension and not lose balance.

Fig. 21 Ikkyo Hands Fig. 22 Step In Fig. 23 Tornado Twist

  5. In Fig. 21 Nage takes the Ikkyo hand position. Nage's right hand comes up on the outside of Uke's right wrist causing Uke's right elbow to move up. At the same time Nage's left hand strikes at Uke's head. This encourages Uke's right elbow to come up to parry the blow to Uke's head. Between the two hands it is easy to get Uke's elbow up.
  6. Fig. 22 shows Nage stepping in with a strong Tornado Twist for the tenkan movement.
  7. Fig. 23 shows Nage continuing the Tornado Twist and stepping back. From here Nage can finish the Ikkyo Tenkan or change to another technique.

Example 5, Morote Tori Static Ikkyo Irimi Front Arm.

Movie of Morote Tori Static Ikkyo Irimi front arm.

Fig. 24 Start Fig. 25 Grab Wrist Fig. 26 2nd Irimi Step

  1. Fig. 24 shows the start with both Uke's hands grabbing Nage's lead wrist. Nage will do the throw using Uke's lead wrist. This is like Uke's right hand grabbing Nage's left hand.
  2. Fig. 25 shows Nage grabbing Uke's right hand with the Nikkyo grip. Ikkyo can be done using this grip. At the same time Nage is finishing the 1st Irimi Step and Nage's left hand is coming up on the outside of Uke's right forearm. This would be a good place for Nage to deliver a Kuta punch to Uke's face before grabbing the wrist..
  3. Fig. 26 shows the end of the 2nd Irimi step and Uke falling. At this point Nage can finish Ikkyo or change techniques.

Example 6, Morote Tori Static Ikkyo Tenkan Front Arm.

Movie of Morote Tori Static Ikkyo Tenkan front arm.

Fig. 27 Start Fig. 28 Grab Wrist Fig. 29 1st Tenkan Step Fig. 30 2nd Tenkan Step

  1. Fig. 27 shows the start with both Uke's hands grabbing Nage's lead wrist. Nage will do the throw using Uke's lead wrist. This is like Uke's right hand grabbing Nage's left hand.
  2. Fig. 28 shows Nage grabbing Uke's right hand with the Nikkyo grip. Ikkyo can be done using this grip. At the same time Nage's left hand is coming up on the outside of Uke's right forearm.
  3. Fig. 29 shows the end of the 1st Tenkan step.
  4. Fig. 30 shows the end of the 2nd Tenkan step and Uke falling. At this point Nage can finish Ikkyo or change techniques.
