Reference: Arm Down

Example 1, Kata Tori Menuchi Arm Down Irimi.

Movie of Kata Tori Menuchi Arm Down Irimi.

Fig. 1 Start Fig. 2 1st Irimi Step Fig. 3 Grab Wrist Fig. 4 2nd Irimi Step

  1. Fig. 1 shows the position for a dynamic start. Nage's and Uke's hands do not quite touch.
  2. Fig. 2 shows the end of the 1st Irimi Step. Nage's left foot has slid in. The strike does not land because Uke's arm is in the way. Nage's wrists form an 'X' similar to an 'X' block except that Nage does not block. This is like Shomen Uchi Arm Down Irimi.
  3. In Fig. 3 Nage's right arm has swept Uke's arm down and Nage has taken the Arm Down grip.
  4. Fig. 4 shows the end of the 2nd Irimi Step. Nage is in the Tornado Twist and Uke is falling.

5. Fig. 5 shows the end of the Tornado Twist. Nage is squatted down and Uke is down. It did not matter whether or not Uke continued to hold Nage's shoulder. Because Uke held on Uke's back hit the floor rather than Uke's face.

Fig. 6 Start Fig. 7 Kuta Entry Strike Fig. 8 1st Tenkan Step Fig. 9 Tornado Twist

  2. In Fig. 7 Nage has stepped to the side and delivered the Kuta Entry Strike. Now Nage's right foot will step forward for the 1st Tenkan step.
  3. Fig. 8 shows the end of the 1st Tenkan step. Nage must not step directly in front of Uke in order to avoid a kick.
  4. Fig. 9 shows the end of the 2nd Tenkan Step and the end of the Tornado Twist. At this point Nage can execute most Aiki throws.
