Tenkan Off Balance

Fig. 1 Entry Step Fig. 2 Throw Step 2

  1. Fig. 1 shows the entry step where Nage gets close to Uke. As Nage jumps towards Uke Nage's lead (right) hand sweeps up with the jump striking Uke's face. The entry can be a basic entry with the lead foot as shown here or a basic entry with the rear foot or an advanced entry.
  2. '>Fig. 2 shows the throw step. Nage's left foot swings around as shown so that it lands behind Uke. As the left foot sweeps around Nage squats down. Nage's back turns towards Uke. There is rarely a chance to strike at this time. On Tenkan it is very important that only Nage's hands touch Uke. If any of Nage's body touches Uke then Uke can press against Nage and resist the throw. It is best to take a step far behind Uke and then Nage's weight shifts behind Uke.

    Example 1. Basic Tenkan.

Fig. 3 Start of Tenkan Fig. 4 Knee Pop

    1. In Fig. 3 Uke is starting to strike Nage's head.
    2. Fig. 4 shows the Knee Pop of the right knee as Nage starts stepping in. Nage's hands are swinging up for the strike to Uke's head.

Fig. 5 1st Step of Tenkan Fig. 6 Strike

    3. Fig. 5 shows the end of the 1st Tenkan step. Nage's hips have a strong Tornado Twist as Nage moves forward to strike the back of Uke's head. The lead foot coming down is the stomp part of the Knee Pop Stomp.
    4. In Fig. 6 Nage's right hand is striking the back of Uke's head and Nage's left hand is by Uke's head, starting to reach down and grab Uke's right arm. Nage still has a strong tornado twist.

Fig. 7 1st Pendulum Step Fig. 8 2nd Pendulum Step

    5. In Fig. 7 Nage has needed to add a Pendulum step to get further behind Uke. When coming in deep like this the Pendulum Step adds depth putting Nage in a safer position with respect to the attack and putting Nage in the proper position for the Tenkan. As Nage continues the Tornado Twist Uke is caught up in Nage's movement and is coming around Nage.
    6. Fig. 8 shows the end of the 2nd Pendulum Step. Nage has stepped far enough behind Uke that no part of Nage Pushes on Uke while Uke falls. If Uke can lean on Nage, Uke can resist Nage. Uke must fall into a hole in front of Uke's line of balance. Nage is leading Uke's arm and head to the mat. The emphasis should be on the arm.

Fig. 9 2nd Tenkan Step Fig. 10 Protect Uke

    7. Fig. 9 Nage has finished the 2nd Tenkan step and Uke is falling.
    8. Fig. 10 shows the finish with Uke on the floor. Nage is supporting Uke's head to protect Uke. This is how practice and applications where it is not appropriate to injure the attacker should be done. In military situations or multiple attack situations where it is essential Uke is disabled, Nage can drive Uke's head into the floor.
