Kuta Techniques

Strikes

Punch Defensive

The basic punch is more of an attacking punch because Nage steps forward. This covers the distance desirable for Aiki. It is good for multiple opponents because Nage is going after them rather than letting them control the action.

This punch is defensive because Nage does not step forward. The attack is a sucker punch or one of multiple opponents got too close and Nage did not have room to step forward. Here the movement is more sideways than straight-ahead and the Tornado Twist is more conspicuous.

Movie of Defensive Punch

Fig. 1 Start of Punch Fig. 2 Knee Pop Fig. 3 Stomp

  1. Fig. 1 is the start of the Punch. Nage is in the basic Kuta practice stance.
  2. In Fig. 2 Nage is well into the startle and exhibits a strong Knee Pop. Notice how much Nage's body has dropped. The Kuta hand is formed and the controlling hand is moving to the chest.
  3. Fig. 3 shows the stomp. This comes about the time the hand contacts the target.

Fig. 4 Tornado Twist Fig. 5 Finish

  4. Fig. 4 shows the strong Tornado Twist as the striking hand punches through the target. Nage's rear foot is in the air.
  5. Fig. 5 shows the Finish. Notice that the striking hand is completely pulled back and Nage has moved to the side avoiding attacks from the front, rear and opposite side.
