Season Recap -- 1999-00
If Redbird Arena is starting to look like home to the Galesburg Silver Streaks, it's probably because this appearance marks their fifth straight trip to the Class AA finals.
That string trails only Chicago Marshall's 13-year run and East St. Louis's six-year run in the Illinois High School Association record books.
All that's missing from the Silver Streaks' experience is a state title.
Galesburg has taken home a third, fourth, second and to go along with this year's fourth place finish.
This year's return to Redbird was made by a team lacking a high scoring star.
Steady 5-5 senior point guard Jaque Howard and 5-9 senior forward Megan Pacheco, both four-year state tourney veterans, earned Associated Press All-State second team status. Howard averaged 8.4 points and 5.1 assists and Pacheco, who missed part of the season with a foot injury, averaged 11.9 points and 5.2 rebounds.
Sarah Pacheco, a 5-11 junior, earned an all-state honorable mention by averaging 11.9 points and 5 rebounds.
Galesburg coach Evan Massey just completed his 22 year as coach and his team's have compiled a 452-178 record with 13 straight regional titles and 13 straight seasons of 20 wins or more.

Silver Streaks should be proud>

Galesburg High School's girl's basketball team no doubt would have preferred to come home with a state championship trophy this past weekend. Cry no tears for the Silver Streaks and the hardware that says fourth place on it, however.
For five consecutive years, the Galesburg girls have finished their season at Redbird Arena, home of the IHSA girls state basketball tournament. In that span, they have compiled a record of 156-20 - an average season of 31-4 - while lugging home medals from four of those tournaments. Fact is they are central Illinois' reigning high school basketball dynasty, boy or girl. You could count on one hand in this state the number of programs in any sport that wouldn't want to trade places.
Galesburg coach Evan Massey and his girls are going to bring the state championship title home to Knox County one of these days, and hopefully not from Redbird Arena but from the Peoria Civic Center. Even if they don't, they're doing a lot of things right in Mr. Massey's neighborhood. In the meantime, give him and his kids a state championship for proper perspective. Instead of concentrating on their season-ending loss, they looked on the bright side of things: "We get to end our season doing something we like to do, which is play basketball," Massey said. Indeed, what could be better than that?
Pay attention, guys. These girls are on to something.
