Season Recap -- 1998-1999

With a fourth straight state finals appearance ranking them only behind East St. Louis Lincoln (5) in downstate teams accomplishing that feat, the 33-2 Galesburg Silver Streaks can match numbers with any girls team in the state.

Consider these accomplishments: 12 straight 20-win seasons, 12 straight regional titles, 5 straight sectional championships, 4 straight state finals appearances, and 7 Western Big Six Conference titles in the 1990's. Coach Evan Massey's team was 148-18 during the past four seasons and that performance boosted him over the 400 career win level during the season.

But those statistics would mean little if Galesburg, No. 2 ranked in the Associated Press poll most of the season, couldn't avenge last year's 59-43 quarterfinal loss to Loyola suffered in last years state finals. Last year's defeat had driven the Silver Streaks this year in their bid to return to Redbird Arena.

Mission Accomplished. Galesburg beat Machesney Park (Harlem), Wilmette (Loyola), and Lincoln by a total of 5 points en route to a second place finish in the state of Illinois.

The Streaks were led by All State Sarah Larson, the schools all time leading scorer (1,906) and rebounder (1,145), who with teammate Jenny Zolper have been members of all four state teams. Other key performers have included juniors Megan Pacheco, Jaque Howard, Michelle Flaar, and Whitney Snyder, all veterans of last year's tournament, and sophomores Rachel Bicego and Sarah Pacheco.
