Evan Massey begins his 30th year as head coach at Galesburg High School. Massey
enters the season with a 654-220 (.748) career record and has coached the Streaks
to 20 straight 20-win seasons. Coach Massey gained his 500th career win on January
5, 2002 and recorded his 600th win as head coach of the Streaks on February
17, 2005 with a 69-57 win over Peoria (HS) ... Last season Massey guided his
Streaks to a 30-4 record before falling to Morton in the sectional final. Under
Massey's direction, Galesburg holds a boys and girls state record 9 straight
sectional championships. The Massey led Streaks teams boast an Elite Eight finish
or better in 7 of the last 12 years. Galesburg has a third place finish in 1996,
a fourth place finish in 1997, 2000, 2001, an Elite-Eight appearance in 1998
and 2003, to go along with a 1999 second place finish. Since 1990, Evan Massey's
teams have posted a 481-88 (.845) record.
In the spring of 2000, Coach Massey was elected into the Illinois Basketball
Coaches Hall of Fame while being selected as the State Coach of the Year in
1997 and in 1999 by the Illinois Girls Coaching Association. Also in 1997, Massey
was selected as the National Federation of Coaches State Coach of the Year and
Regional Coach of the Year.
On November 25, 2000, Coach Massey was inducted into the GHS Athletic Hall of
Fame making him only the second active coach (the other being former longtime
baseball coach Gary Bruington) ever inducted into the GHS Athletic Hall of Fame.
Massey earned another hall of fame status on Friday, October 17, 2003 when he
was inducted into the Allan P. Christiansen Knox-Lombard Hall of Fame as a four-year
letter winner in basketball at Knox College.
On November 29, 2003, Massey’s 1995-96 team was elected into the GHS Athletic
Hall of Fame. The team posted a 29-6 record en route to its 3rd place finish
in the Class AA state tournament series. That year, the Streaks finished 2nd
in the Western Big 6 Conference, 1st in the Streaks Classic Thanksgiving Tournament,
2nd at the Peoria Manual Christmas Tournament, and were ranked as high as 5th
in the AP Class AA girls basketball poll. The '96 team was the first ever GHS
girls basketball team to win a state trophy.
On Saturday, November 25, 2006, the second Massey coached team joined the GHS
Athletic Hall of Fame. That team posted a 33-2 record en route to its 2nd place
finish in the Class AA state tournament series. The Streaks finished 1st in
the Western Big 6 Conference, 1st in the Streaks Classic Thanksgiving Tournament,
Grand Champions at the Bloomington Normal Christmas Tournament, 1st in the Martin
Luther King Tournament, and were ranked 2nd in the final AP Class AA girls basketball
poll of the season. The '98 team was the highest place ever for a GHS girls
basketball team.
Massey coached cross country for 17 years and was a sophomore football assistant
for two years.
Since taking over the girls' program in 1978, Coach Massey has sent 39 players

Angie Glayean, Ami Pendry, Shannon Johnson; Division I- Brenna Saline, Molly

Coach Massey comes from a family of educators. He is the son of Marjorie (retired
teacher) and the late W.F. Massey (teacher and coach) of Savanna, Illinois.
His brother Mark teaches social studies, and is the head volleyball coach at
Clinton High School in Clinton, Iowa.
Coach Massey is a 1970 graduate of Savanna High School. From there Massey continued
his education at Knox College and was a long haired swingman for Harley Knosher's
Men's Basketball (then) Siwash. Massey earned his degree in American Studies
with a minor in Psychology from Knox in 1974. Coach Massey earned a masters
degree in 1979 from Western Illinois University in Educational Foundations.
He has taught social studies at Galesburg High School since 1974. He is currently
the head of the social studies department at Galesburg High School.
His wife Amy is a social worker. The Masseys have one child, Allen (10).
