Brenna Saline Commits to S.l.U

Wednesday September 6, 2006, Brenna Saline, 5’8” guard from Galesburg made a verbal commitment to attend Southern Illinois University at Carbondale on a basketball scholarship. Brenna is the daughter of Harold and Terri Saline. Brenna had been a regular on the Streaks varsity each of her first three years at GHS, and has started the last two years. Last year she led the Streaks in scoring with a 12.8 average. She has been All-Conference as a sophomore and junior, and has been IBCA All-State as both a sophomore and junior. In addition, Brenna has a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the classroom.

Southern Illinois is coached by Dana Eikenberg. She enters her third year as the head coach of the Salukis. Eikenberg is a 1992 graduate of Penn State, where she was a four year starter at point guard. Eikenberg is assisted by Jody Adams (Tennessee, 1993) and Susan Koering (Iowa, 1997).
Saline chose SIU over Western Illinois University, Quincy University, and the Air Force Academy. Brenna has amassed 934 points in her high school career. Last year she shot 48% from the field and 82% from the free throw line. Brenna is only the fourth players in GHS history to be on the varsity as a regular as a freshmen. The Streaks have compiled an overall 80-19 record during Brenna’s three years on the varsity, and have been ranked in the top #10 in Illinois each of her first three years.

Silver Streaks College Players

Brenna Saline is the 10th Silver Streak in the last fifteen years to earn a Division I or Division II scholarship.

During the last fifteen years, another 11 Silver Streaks have received either NAIA or Junior College basketball scholarships.

In the last fifteen years, a total of 21 Silver Streaks players have received full or partial basketball scholarships.

Also, during this time 8 players played basketball at the Division III level (By rule, NCAA Division III schools can give no athletic scholarships but can give aid for academic achievements or based on financial needs.)

A total of 29 Silver Streaks have gone on to play college basketball in the last fifteen years.

Division I & Division II
Tiffany Sibley (Class of 1992) Northern Iowa
Ann Henderson (Class of 1993) Illinois
Amber West (Class of 1994) UNC Greensboro
Bonny Apsey (Class of 1995) Illinois
Ami Pendry (Class of 1996) Wayne State
Molly Watson (Class of 1997) DePaul
Sarah Larson (Class of 1999) SIU Edwardsville
Jaque Howard (Class of 2000) SIU Edwardsville
Casey Berry (Class of 2003) West Georgia St.
Brenna Saline (Class of 2007) Southern Illinois

Quotes from Coach Evan Massey:
“Brenna has one of the best work ethics of any Streaks player I have ever coached. Her passion and enthusiasm for basketball make her a coach’s dream. I am so happy for her.”

“This past spring and summer she has really invested the time to improve her three point shot. On the first day of college observation she hit 8 shots in a row, including 5 threes in the first half. In the month of July she had to have shot over 50% from three point range. By the end of the summer she was offensively dominating games from the guard position.”

“One of the big keys with our past players and certainly with Brenna Saline has been that they have not focused on getting a scholarship. Brenna’s focus has been entirely on being a good high school player, enjoying her high school experience, and being a good high school teammate. We sold her that if you worry about being a good high school player that if you are good enough college will take care of itself.”

“Brenna has taken no time off in the weight room. Since November of her freshmen year, she has been in the GHS weight room 3 days per week in the off-season and 2 days a week in-season. Every college coach who recruited her commented that she was physically more prepared than the typical incoming freshmen.”

“Some people worry that the player who signs early will lose their drive. Brenna came back from her official visit at SIU and was offered a full ride. On that Sunday she hustled back to get into the weight room with her teammates, and in the rain on that Monday evening one of our assistants saw her shooting by herself in one of the local parks. The goals that Brenna has for her team for her senior year and the goals she has for college are too high for her to ever become complacent.”

“I think that Southern will be a very good fit for Brenna. Their coaches have been very professional throughout the recruiting process. Brenna would like to get into college coaching upon graduation, and I think that the SIU coaches will be good role models for her and they also are very well connected in the world of college basketball.”
