The 2005 State Farm Holiday Classic teams have been released. The largest co-ed holiday high school basketball tournament in the nation will organize its 27th annual event on Dec. 27-30 and will mark the seventh consecutive year with State Farm Insurance as the title sponsor. Galesburg will be making its 9th straight appearance in the Classic. Along with the Streaks, the Girls' Class AA field will feature state champion Peoria (Richwoods), Bolingbrook, which took 4th in state a year ago, Naperville (Neuqua Valley), which made it to the state's Final Four in 2001 and 2002, and George Washington Carver out of Montgomery, AL. The Lady Wolverines feature several of the top players in Alabama. "Over the years we have been fortunate to field some of the best girls’ basketball teams in Illinois,” said Classic vice-president Dave Oloffson. “But this year could truly be billed as a December state tournament with the potential number of state-ranked teams playing.”

The 2005-2006 non-conference schedule has been released. Galesburg adds three new non-conference opponents this year in Burbank (Queen of Peace), Oswego (East) and Winnetka (New Trier). They replace Peoria (Manual), Chicago (Maria), and Minooka who all dropped for various reasons. The final three, Park Ridge (Maine South), Buffalo Grove, and Sterling, all remain on the schedule.

Galesburg will host Park Ridge (Maine South)--Dec. 3, Buffalo Grove--Dec. 20, and Oswego (East)--Jan. 28 and will travel to Burbank (Queen of Peace)--Dec. 10, Sterling--Jan. 21, and Winnetka (New Trier)--Feb. 4.

Coach Evan Massey had these thoughts on this year's non-conference schedule. "We attempted to get more local teams on our schedule but were unable to get any commitments. We are very excited about the additions to our schedule.

"Queen of Peace has the former athletic director and head coach of Maria and we hope to establish a long term relationship with their school. Queen of Peace (1,636 girls) is much larger than Maria (928 girls).

"Oswego East is a new school and is in a hot bed of girls basketball with Neuqua Valley and the Naperville's.

"We worked very hard to work out a game with New Trier. They will return a 6'4" center as a junior next year, and they are consistently in the top ten in Illinois. Before injuries they were ranked #1 in Illinois last year, and with Sterling, Maine South, and Buffalo Grove, we are playing top flight programs." Sterling and Buffalo Grove were both ranked in the top 25 at different points of the season last year.

"We are obviously very excited about the potential of the young players in our program and hope they will have very high goals. We have put together a schedule that should be a real challenge and expose our young players to some of the best teams in Illinois. While we are not necessarily excited about the long school bus rides, we hope our fans appreciate the quality of teams we are trying to bring to Galesburg for them to see."
