In October of 2002, my family began buzzing about something that happened to my little 4 year-old nephew, Colin. After giving it some thought, I thought his story would, perhaps, help someone's faith. So, with permission from his mother, I'll relate the story to you.
My sister, Julie, was driving home from Colin's pre-school with Colin nestled safely in the back seat of the car. Looking in her rear view mirror, she noticed a car coming up behind her, darting in and out of traffic, seemingly a little out of control. Realizing that the auto in question was some distance from her, she wasn't overly concerned, surmising that the driver would have it under control by the time it got to her.
Instead, as the weaving car approached, it only became more erratic. Now, she was becoming concerned. Her concern was justified, as the car came speeding upon her so quickly that she knew she was now in real danger. Not only was she in danger, Colin was in even greater peril as he was sitting in the back seat. Colin, though, wasn't concerned as he was happily playing and looking out the window, totally unaware of the approaching car. The car was now on top of Julie's car and, to her horror, she knew she was going to get hit and, worse, that Colin was sitting in the direct path of the out-of-control car. When the car hit, it was going to crash into the precise area where Colin was sitting. She couldn't speed up to avoid the car as there were cars blocking both lanes in front of her. There was nothing she could do.
This is where the story takes a bizarre turn. Julie knew it was hopeless. Right at the point when the cars were going to crash, Colin (still unaware that there was anything wrong) became extremely excited. "Look mommy, look!" Colin shouted, giggling and looking out his window, "Mommy, turn around, look, its neat, wow, it's cool" All Julie could do was close her eyes and scream. "Don't yell, mommy", Colin protested, "it hurts my ears!" Shocked that there was no impact, Julie opened her eyes and, to her astonishment, the speeding car had missed them, going off into the median. Julie sat motionless, still shaking so hard she couldn't speak.
When she was finally able to regain her composure, she began questioning Colin as to what he was so excited about. He told her that he saw angels outside the car. Julie says she has never seen Colin so excited and emotional. Probing further, Julie asked for more details. Colin obliged. As Colin told it and consistently retells it to this day, he saw white angels with wings come down "out of the sky". When asked how many angels he saw, he stated that there were two angels. He described them as "girl" angels but he couldn't tell what color hair they had because "they had things on the back of their head". When asked what those things looked like, he, with his finger, drew an imaginary circle on top of his head. He did say that they had "big hair", though. Were they in the car? "No", he said, "they were outside. They flew down from the sky", he explained, moving his arms up and down like he was flying. When asked to describe their actions, he said that one came over to his window and looked in at him. The angel had green eyes. Colin showed how the angel looked at him by smiling and squinting. While that angel stayed by his window, the other angel "went behind", meaning to the rear of the car. No matter how many times Julie questions Colin, he tells the same story each time. She even tries to trick him by asking misleading questions but he quickly corrects her, returning to his original account of the story.
Now, Colin is not a kid that has shown a previous propensity for fabricating stories. He has never given any indication of having an overly-active imagination. While somewhat sensitive, he's a very level-headed boy. To him, this whole ordeal is not a big deal. He'll talk about the angels until he "doesn't want to talk anymore" and, then, he returns to playing with his toys. Likewise, Julie is not the type of lady that "over-doses" on spiritual things. She doesn't sit around talking about angels, demons, or any other type of spiritual beings. She has no idea how Colin knows anything about angels unless they discussed it at their Presbyterian pre-school. He had not seen angels before this nor has he seen any since.
Like I said, our family has been buzzing about this. It sounds to us like Colin is a very credible witness to an angelic visitation at a most perilous moment in his life. The cars should have crashed. They didn't. No one was injured. Did Colin, in his moment of panic, just see imaginary beings in the hope that he would be saved? How could this be? Remember, Colin had no idea that there was any reason to panic. He was totally oblivious to the impending danger. He remains, to this day, unaware that a car almost hit them. Were these guardian angels reacting to the threat on Julie's and Colin's safety or, worse, lives?
Hmmm…You tell me.
