There are three distinct categories of horse to be found in the lands. The first, and largest is the heavy horse. Bred for hard labor and often adapted for combat. The heavy horse is a standard fixture of many farms in the world. The second type of horse is the light horse. Their breeding has them focusing far more on speed and quick transport than hard work. The final category is the medium horse. A collection of compromise stock, these animals were an attempt by herdsmen to find a middleground between workhorse and easy transport. They are the least common of the three groupings, but that is saying little given the saturation of the world with domesticated horses.

Apontwun
The wild painted horses of the northern steppe, these horses have been bartered by traders as far south as the Ulek States and as far east as Tenh. Most refer to this breed as "painted" in shorthand trade slang. They are known for their high levels of endurance and ability to travel great distances while only grazing on steppe grass. Common color patterns are overo (solid color with large uneven patches of white) or tobiano (white with large oneven patches of solid color).

Olviloesa
A common mount of the Highfolk region. This breed of horse has developed a reputation for its raw strength, balance, and ability to climb over rocky hills and steep slopes with ease. It is well liked and sought after by any who have a great deal of travel to do in the hills and low mountains of the west. The Olvoloesa's coat runs from Leopard (white with dark blotches over hind), to snowflake (spots all over, more on hind), to blanket (blotches over upper hind). Less common patterns include marble and frost, though many elves seem to like these colors.

Eefreesya
Crown of the baklunish stables, these strong-willed, high-strung horses are some of the fasts mounts in the world. Favored by the Paynim tribes and the cavalry of Ekbir, Tusmit, and Zief; these horses have been traded enough and found enough use by couriers and mercenaries that the Eefreesyan might be found in any noble's stable from Keoland to Rel Astra. Eefreesyan coats range from Chestnut (gold), bay (reddish), grey, or black.

Hurkhai
These are the famed horses of the Wolf and Tiger Nomads. A well rounded, durable steppe horse, they have become an increasingly popular commodity in the northern and central kingdoms. The color pattern shows a distinctive metallic gold sheen overlaying a fine haired coat colored bay, grey, black, or dun (yellowish or bluish).

Schaelun
Bred for the cold weather of the north, this breed is thought to be as stubborn as a mule but made to endure the long winters of the north. Despite its awkward appearance, it is surprisingly agile and capable of balancing well on snow and icy slopes. These horse have been bred to the point that their coats have lost all real distinctiveness. Because of this they can be most any color or pattern save "painted."

Aerduin
Considered the oldest breed of medium horse found in the Flanaess, the Aerduin has been bred to the ideal all medium horse breeders dream of matching. Possessing amazing strength, agility, and surprising speed, Aerduin are prized in all the realms that once paid fealty to the Great Kingdom. They are most common in Ahlyssa and the North Kingdom, then growing more scarce the farther west you go. Typically born in a very dark color, their coat becomes paler as they age until it is almost pure white by the time they are seven. However about 1 in 300 remain black throughout their lives.

Ethrender
Bred by Furyondy farmers to help tame these long ago wild lands, the Ethrender has shown itself to be a strong, if docile, animal. Its massive build has made it an excellent workhorse, but with almost no exception Ethrender have not been able to enter combat, their nature too timid to fight or defend adequately. Ethrender can be of any coloration, but they never have any white save for below their knees or on their face.

Keleshan
The wealth of Keoland is not in its fields and mines alone. This breed of workhorse is found throughout the lands west of the Wild Coast. Well known for its endurance in the field and hardiness in battle, the keshallan is sought after by horsemen from the Shieldlands to the Yeomanry. A keshallan’s coat is usually a rust red coloration, but some range into brown and black. Regardless though, they are almost uniformly solid in color.

Nuartae
This is one of the rarest breeds of horse found beyond the realms of the Scarlet Brotherhood. A vigorous, dominant horse, it is aggressive towards all other breeds if not extremely well trained, fortunately for the Brotherhood their horse-masters are almost sadistic in their zeal for training. Considered a rival of light horses for speed, the Nuartae is also exceptionally strong for its racing build. They are normally grey, bay, or black with either a solid coat or marked with black blotches over their upper hinds.

Staivendale
This strange breed of horse is found in the Ulek States. Most believe it was bred into existence by dwarves to help in the tilling of their valley fields and the plains bordering their mountain fortresses. Inspired by the distant breed of Aerduin, the Staivendale is neither as impressive nor as popular as the older horse breed. Still it has served as an adequate multi-purpose horse for many years and seen use throughout much of the Flanaess. They are normally colored in a variety of dark brown hues with manes that run bay to black with a matching coloration below their knees.

Azren Bay
Made popular in the limited fields of the southwest, this hard working and agile draft horse is well bred for the warm forests and hills of the south. Its muscular build and natural acclimation to the southern heat makes it an ideal work-beast. It is one of the most common horses found in the Sea Princes, Yeomanry, and Geoff. The Azren Bay’s colors run from gray to roan, while those of white and chestnut patterns are more rare.

Daozendii
Discovered first in the dry climate of the Zief and Ekbir, these impressive animals make up in speed and endurance what they lack in strength and patience. Considered high-strung when trained for war, their preferred use, this breed has seen use in mercenary companies as far east as the Urnst States. Tales speak of riders spending weeks bonding with the mount and training it to respond. Those found or purchased later are easy going, but reluctant to enter combat even if previously war-trained. Daozendii are typically white, grey, or chestnut in coloration, and roan or bay masking on their faces are common.

Dwurfelding
This capable workhorse is most commonly seen in the south eastern lands of the Iron League, Ahlissa, and even on the few island fields of the Sea Barons and Lordship Isles. Squat in stature for a heavy horse, these animals are slightly slower than most but can outlast and outpull most farm animals, while still being easy to handle and quick to respond to changes in command. Some claim it is the ox of the horse breeds. Its colorations are predominantly black, grey, or roan; though a rare few are a bay or honeyed brown.

Marklundeir
Many argue that this is the most impressive heavy horse bred for war within the lands of men. Strong, fast, and with a fierce temper and loyal disposition, the Marklundeir is the mount all knights wish they could claim. Found first within the Shield Lands and Furyondy, this breed of horse is one of the most expensive to be found and is the only mount used by the Knight Protectors of the Great Kingdom. To find one free is to find the last proof that a knight has fallen nearby. There are many colors of this breed ranging from brown and black, to grey, bay, and even chestnut with white colorations below the knees common.

Sheldan Grey
Considered the the ideal mount by the Knights of the Watch, this clever and agile steed is prized by knights and cavalry all across the Sheldomar Valley, west to those who border the Crystalmist and as far east as the Wild Coast. The ablity to carry a fully armor knight with travelling gear while still allowing for full charge in surprise situations is a desire carried by all blooded veterans. This is why the Sheldan Greys are so sought after. As the name suggests, a fully matured Sheldan Grey varies in coloration from solid grey to a marbled coloration mixing in blotches of black on its upper hind. Most also bear solid black coloration below their knees. When born though they are commonly pure white or pure black and slowly change color by the time they reach the age of five.

Vexan
This harsh breed of horse is thought to have spawned in the lands of Iuz while others claim the Horned Society was responsible. It is an aggressive beast; prone to temperamental fits, and a general refusal to obey unless it is held in thrall by a strong, some would say brutal, rider. None would even think to claim one of these animals as a mount if not for the fact that they are considered the strongest, hardiest breed of horse in the Flanaess. Vexans are always solid and dark in coloration, though it ranges from a deep brown to black to a strangely tinted midnight blue, those not black frequently have black masks or markings on their faces and legs.
