How
to cut a head in 5 easy steps.
Before
you cut you should install the rocker shaft whole, and drill for your
roll pins. A valuable tip I was unaware of when I started. Mark the
depth you want to go into the rocker stand on the drill bit with
tape, about half way I'm told. This will index the rockers to the
pushrods, so if you disassemble the head you don't have to go through
aligning the rockers again. ... Ever.
I
started here marking a line, and trying to stay in the center on the
way down. You will have to miss the push rod tube hole, and turn back
to line up on your previous cut, and keep from cutting the gusset
right there beside it. I took the blade out of the handle and made
the turn. You could also not cut the rocker box flange straight down,
as I did, and that would help. But you are not ready for this yet.
You
will run out of hack saw eventually, and will have to flip the head.
Here I have marked a line between the head stud holes, and have sawed
until I can nick the rocker box flange.
Use
that nick, and what you have already cut to mark between the intake
ports.
You
will probably need a new tube of elbow grease here, but keep cutting
until you run out of saw again. Then you will have to negotiate the
transition from curving around that push rod tube hole and getting
back straight without cutting that gusset.
Here
you go. two heads for the price of one. You will save
$$$$$!!!
