NOW, CLIVE BARKER’S PLAY
COMES TO TOWN . . .
THE DEVIL IS IN DA ‘VILLE,
APRIL 2005.
March 31, 2005 – Sight and Sound presents Clive Barker’s four act play The History of the Devil, April 27-30, 2005 at the Kentucky Center’s MeX Theater! John Hetzel will be the show’s director. Dramatic, witty, sensual, full of dark humor and deep philosophical questions, Devil is Barker’s stage masterpiece.
The Devil wants to get back into Heaven. So he takes the most logical course of
action: he goes to court.
By
"volunteering" the help of barrister Samuel Kyle, Satan defends
himself in the greatest trial of all time. Meanwhile, prosecutors Jane
Beck and
Catharine Lamb are determined to keep him in Hell. As both sides
present their
case, flashbacks from the Devil's past are reenacted, building to a
terrifying
twist ending.
Devil, like the best of Barker’s work,
is controversial and entertaining. It
contains adult content, language, sexuality and nudity, and is meant
for an
adult audience.
Tickets
are on sale now for $18.00, through the Kentucky Center’s box office
(502.584.7777 or 800.775.7777), or through Ticketmaster (502.361.3100). Seating is general admission.
Performances begin at 7:30 pm each
night. The play is approximately two
hours and forty minutes, with a twenty minute intermission.

John
Hetzel and Troy Colon, the partners behind Sight and Sound, are no
strangers to
Kentucky theater. They have produced
nine stage productions over the past four years, and pride themselves
in
maintaining both technical and artistic excellence in their work. Paul Kopasz
of LEO Magazine complimented their production
of The Trial: “[Sight and Sound] is appropriately named as they
pay much
more attention to mise en scène than is often the local
norm. . . . John
Hetzel and Troy Colon acquit themselves nicely behind the scenes,
making sure
the technical aspects of the play are as well honed as the acting and
the
script.” They are excited to bring the Devil
to Louisville.
Stephen
King has said, "I have seen the future of horror, and his name is Clive
Barker." Barker's books, such as The Damnation Game, Weaveworld,
and The Great and Secret Show are bestsellers with millions of
copies in
print. In addition, Barker-related movies (such as the Hellraiser
series
and Candyman) have made well over $100 million in box office,
rental and
video sales. Barker is also a film director; he helmed the
classic Hellraiser,
based on his own short story.
Barker was born in
Liverpool in 1952. After starting in theater, he began writing short
stories in
his late twenties, and later moved to novels. His commercial and
critical
success began in the 1980's and continues today. Barker's latest book
Abarat
is riding high on bestseller lists. He will soon go behind the camera
again to
direct Tortured Souls, based on his series of collectible toy
figures.
Barker currently lives in Los Angeles.
