Israel's 10 oldest sons took his flocks 50 miles north from Hebron to graze in Shechem . . . then they moved 17 miles north to Dothan (below), near the main caravan route to Egypt (see map at left). Joseph was sent by Israel to check on the flocks; when he found them near Dothan, his brothers sold him as a slave to caravan traders.
