Abraham moves about 35 miles east from Hebron to Gerar, where he settles (after resolving problems with the local king, Abimelech). Here Abraham's son Isaac -- the child of God's promise -- is born.

Abraham moves from Gerar to Beersheva, where he digs a well and plants a tamarisk tree. The well at left is widely believed to be Abraham's well (but the nearby tamarisk tree is symbolic).

With the birth of Isaac, Sarah insists that Hagar and Ishmael be banished. They first go to the Negev region around Beersheba (below left), where they almost die of thirst, until an angel shows them a well. Then they move south to the desert of Paran (below right)
