This map illustrates the story related in Genesis 14. Four "Kings from the East" (yellow arrows) defeat the "Cities of the Plain," including Sodom, and carry away Lot with other captives. Abraham pursues and rescues Lot (red arrows). On his return, in the King's Valley at Salem (now Jerusalem), Abraham gives a tithe to Melchizedek, "priest of God Most High," and receives a blessing. |
Left:
Remnants of Middle Bronze Gate of the city of Dan, through which Abraham
passed in pursuit of Lot's captors, and/or on his return. Below:
Model of this gate as it may have stood at the time of Abraham. |
Left: Approximate place in the "King's Valley" (the Kidron Valley today) where Abraham gave a tithe to Melchizedek and received a blessing. Excavations of ancient Jerusalem, site of the city of Salem, can be seen on the hill. |
